ce 3 post

This week i did a political cartoon making fun of blagovich trying to sell obamas senate seat. The caarttoon looks like an ebay page, with the senator pointing out a chair that sasy this is "fucking golden". Its acttually a really funny cartoon that is able to be understood very easily. On the side it has actual things that look like the ebay page, like shipping and location aka DC and end time which is soon bc he might go to jail. At the top it say, US senate seat, like new barely used by barack obama showing that obama didnt have that seat very long. I like this cartoon bc its unique compared to alot of the others making fun of this situation.

political cartoon # 2 blogg

This week I analized a political cartoon. The cartoon was a picture of the United states, made up of words all decribing our troubles that we are facing today, with Obama in the corner taking in all the pressure of out issues he is going to have to take on. The Cartoon title was "Gross National Problems" and had many words that jumped out more then others that really did describe our nation. Iraq, Recession, and unemployed were three of the many words that really jumped out at me. When i observed this cartoon, the words overwhelming and stress were the first things that came to my mind. With Obama looking blown away at the bottom, and with such strong bold fonts, the words made me think in depth at the United states isssues.

Blog post #1 political cartoon

The cartoon i looked at was titalyed " The Amercian History Museum Reopens". It express's how the United states use to be in a perfect little american lifestyle till 2007. The people in the cartoon are all gathered around a glass globe at a museum and they are all just staring into the glass that has a typical family, mom, dad, boy and girl, and then two cars in an everage house. Around the glass is written "The post war boom 1946-2007", the words mean that as of 2007 the boom is over and what we are seeing pictured is now history. The message in this cartoon probably wouldnt thrill interests groups such as the elite, and even the current administration becasue it shows that they messed up big time.

election post #6

Hmm as much as I really dont like either candidates, and I really would prefer McCain to win, I really do believe the winner of the Presidential election is going to be Obama. I think that Obama is going to win with around 300, meaning a pretty big win with the electoral college, and votes wise. From what i read recently online, a weird prediction said, obama wins electoral votes but not popular votes, that would be really interesting. The reason i think Obama will win though proving that prediction wrong, is because i feel all the young people that are americas future are going to vote for him and the older people will vote McCain. Leaving it at that, more young and middle aged people make up our population leaving it to be Obama as the winner. I feel like that would def mess up our government, considering dems are all for nation wide health care and big government, i think that dumb. I think his idea of "change" isnt good, and is going to screw us up. Why the hell would anyone want a huge government instaead of small governments that know your area and state better then anyone, it just doesnt make sense. Anyways sorry i went off topic, but The winner of the Senate race i believe is going to be Mark Warner, hasnt he already won pretty much? I dont know anyone not voting for him, its almost as if Jim Gilmore doesnt exist. For the 11th house race, all else being equal, the 11th District has been trending Democratic for years. Tom Davis won there and held onto his seat because he was a moderate Republican with a political history in Fairfax County. I def think Tom Davis is going to pull this one out. And for the 10th i beleive that Judy Feder is going to win. I believe this becuase i think the state of Virgina is true Republicans, and is going to swing toward the Republican candidates during the local election, yet presidential wise its going to surprisingly swing democratic.

Yesterday was my last hour of volunteerring!!!! it was deff the best day yet. I went with Caroline, Stephen and Kylie. We had a party upp in there. WHen we first got in, the guy introduced himself to us bc it was a dif guy from the last time, and he led us to this wall. The wall had alot of times to sign up for walking around and doing phone calls, stephen and caroline signed up for walking around from 3-6 today, i was to scared to sign up for that, i wasnt in the mood to get totally rejected at peoples doors, plus i was done getting all my hours. After that we made our way to the phones, i had to teach stephen to do it since he was a newbie, i felt like such a regular knowing how to do the phone calls so well, it was pretty intense. The whole time we all just had fun and pretty much made fun of how lame we all sounded doing all the phone calls, caroline always had the same possition when she called someone and talked so fast, kylies voice got really serious, stephen just sounded dumb, and supposidly my voice became really high pitch. Oh well it was a fun night and we made the best out of it. towards the end of the last hour, a man came in and i had to show him how to do the calls, it was really awkward because he was so much older then me and he was confused on how to use the phone, i thought it was a joke but i guess he was just kinda a flat out idiot. Anyways, the main guy at the office signed all my forms and gave me a perfect evaluation. Not going to lie, he loved me becuase i knew what i was doing and taught others how to make calls aswell. I definately had fun doing my hours at the McCain office, and i really wouldnt mind just going back and doing it some more for fun, as lame as that sounds. I feel like being there really helped me learn more about the election and really helped me get involved and want me to learn even more then what i know now.

i lovee mccainn:)

im going to post pics as soon as i get them sent to me, sooo yeah.

current event # 6

This article focuses on the fashion of today with different diversities. In the past years, magazines have really been focusing on ethnicity’s representing their magazines. Although some whites have been complaining about ethnicity’s representing workplaces in a bad manor for their style. In response to these complaints, editors sat down and discuss viewpoints on the subject of race and how its represented in the magazine. In New York the concern was brought up about blacks not being able to walk the runway because of the look for a certain European style. Vogue recently did a magazine titled “Black Vogue” just feature black models. This magazine came out in Italy causing controversy because of the fact of Italian runways are not into have diversities model their styles. The issue of this Italian Vogue brought interest to the US. The Vogue editor decided that he would now dedicate another issue to black men, donating money raised to African charities. The editor named Sozzani has found many ways to address diversity, he thinks that he is setting an example for Americans, and he hopes we can follow it. The issues that she has brought out speak to the community who can make a difference in how they look at ethnic groups and how beauty should really be defined. Although it is hard for many to see past AID’s, Rwanda, and Darfur, other foreign countries believe that us Americans need to get passed them and be more hopeful. As Sozanni repeats in the article “Fashion is not only about clothes.”

Last night Caroline and I went back to the McCain headquarters place in Sterling. There were three other people in the room making phone calls with us for 2 hours. One man was a 40 year oldish spannish man who was as nice as can be. He kept cracking jokes with us. Another person was a highschool student just like caroline and i. he was a goof. And last but not least was this old woman, who gave us a hug goodbye and said thatnks for helping the campaign. she was soo adorable. Anwaysssss. i continued with my calling like i had the sunday before. Since it was a week night, more people answered. I continued to get hung up on, laughed at, or once in awhile someone friendly wouuld answer and go along with my survey. It was another good day at the office i guess you could say. And all the people working there are so nice and relaxed, they just reallly want McCain to win so they kinda go all out. I guess thats all for now :)

Week 5- election post

In the South there are several Swing states. I deicded to focus though on North Carolina and Florida considering i love vacationing to those states :). All the southern states are pretty much safe bets for McCain minus Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, Virginia and West Virginia . As of now West Virgina and Virginia are easing toward the safe territory for Obama and McCain. While such states such as Georgia is likely to break form McCain due to teen African American voters. Leaving the decision pretty much up to NC and FL. In previous years, FL has been A swing state, while NC has only gone Democratic for 50 years. Both of these states are in comon for the fact that they are heavily changing which has given the Democrats a boost. Because of Obamas major efforts in North Carolina, it has given him an oppurtunity.

I believe that North Carolina will swing towards Obama due to his effort hes put forth in that state, and i think that FL will go the same route as North Carolina, considering they both are in the same boat. I would have to say at this point, Obamas got it all.

volunteeringg!! blog 1

So today I went to a McCain Palin campaign place in Sterling with kylie. You went upstairs to this big room and it had a ton of papers, signs, phones, sign up sheets, and just a bunch of stuff for the campaign. There was a few other high-schoolers there and some adults. We were assigned to do calls to random people with a script we had to read off. the first time i did it i sounded like a total idiot, but i was pretty sweet i guess. The people volunteering were really chill and layed back, and they all talked about how funny the Sarah Palin SNL last night was really funny. Which i totallyy agree on. Anyways, the calls were really interesting, i either got the response, I'm a Democrat, Take me off your calling tree, A cuss word, A hang up, or a yeah im voting Republican (trying to convey the message of me leaving them alone). I called 6 pages of numbers saying "Hi is so and so there...This is Hailey and I'm a volunteer for the McCain Palin campaign." And that was when i got one of those responses. If the person chose to talk, i asked them 3 questions about how they were voting then hung up and continued with the next number on the list. Volunteering today was pretty easy, i really didnt mind doing it. I think im going to go back a coupple times this week, i guess im now considered a telemarketer.

Im going to post some pictures soon

CURRENT EVENT # 5

A few days ago Taliban militants stopped a bus on Afghanistan’s huge highway which is located in a very dangerous location of the country due to many accidents bombings killing many innocent bystanders. 50 people were on the bus that is noted in this article and 27 of them were killed. Investigated by specialists, there is was said to be no soldiers aboard yet all the victims were civilians. The bus traveling behind another, watched the bus it was trailing behind get shot at killing a young child before the second bus was attacked. With such discreprency on how many were killed, the information was not released till today, Sunday, October 19, 2008. With the death toll changing quite frequently, first 27 then 31 then 24, the count was discussed at a news conference concluding that the final number was 24, ages ranging from 20 to 25 (Although there is no accurate way to independently verify the number of victims traveling on the bus). With such confusion about the attack, the Taliban want to keep it a secret that they arrested innocent Afghan civilians for a connection with the attack. Taliban attacks have noticeably increased throughout this year in eastern and southern Afghanistan killing more than 5100 people.

week four- election post

PRESIDENTIAL RACE

Poll # 1 that I looked at was on polltrack.com, it showed the electoral votes for each state and the percentage of votes that Obama and McCain each have as of today. I chose 5 states to observe, bothe democrat and republican so I could see the perspective of the states on the candidates.

States
california 55 ev, obama 53.3% McCain 38.8% safe obama
virginia 13 ev, obama 51.8% McCain 43.7% leaning obama
texas 34 ev, obama 38.0% McCain 50.7 safe McCain
north carolina 15 ev, obama 47.9% McCain 46.7% too close to call
colorado 9 ev, obama 50.4% McCain 44.6% leaning obama

These numbers look as if obama is going to win the election in popular votes, yet looking at the map with color codes saying which candidate is safe and leaning, the colors of red repubs and blue dems look pretty easy with gray states splitting them up.

I also took a look at another polling site that had alot of interesting info that had just been updated. The website itsself said, the race does come down to the states and McCain is behind in most of the key battleground states. Although, It’s the first time since September 25 that McCain’s support has reached 46%, but Obama has now enjoyed a four-to-eight point advantage for twenty-one straight days. And looking back at one of the states that i had looked at on the other polling site, with just under three weeks to go before Election Day, Senator Barack Obama leads Senator John McCain in Virginia by 6.0% among likely voters, 49.2% to 43.2%. Obama’s lead appears to be driven by voter concerns about the economy.

SENATE RACE

-2008 Virginia Senate General Election: Gilmore (R) 31.5% vs Warner (D) 58.4%
-Regionally, Warner continues to hold double-digit leads in every part of the state, including a 31-point edge, 58-27, in Hampton Roads. He also leads by double digits among voters in every age group and among both men and women.
-Warner enjoys the support of more than 90 percent of his fellow Democrats and has the backing of nearly six of every 10 independents. He also was supported by nearly one in four Republicans.

Polling in modern elections i believe makes a big differnce in the final results. It shows the opinions of many people and how they feel about the candidates ideas and ways in which they are going to improve our nation. I find the polls pretty accurate, although if McCain makes a tricky move he may jump into the lead towards the end of the election, but the polls for both Senate and Presidential races seem moderately correct.

currenntt event # 4

Obama and Osama Bin Laden were compared by the chairman of VA Republican Party bc of the connection of Obama and Bill Ayers, who was part of domestic bombings of Vietnam.  Both democrats and some Republicans agree these comparisons are outraged statements in this election.  VA chairman Jeffery M. Frederick quotes both Obama and McCain have so called friends who bombed the Pentagon.  Although Obama was a child during the bombing of the Pentagon in '72 and had not yet met Ayers, Obama himself planned the attack on the Pentagon, yet Ayers planned one aswell.  Many people would rather lie about Obama than make a point about McCains plans of continuing Bush's policies for another 4 years.  Obama himself has denounced Ayers actions claiming he is a just a local neighborhood guy, yet Frederick quotes Obama is simply not ready to lead our country.

week three- election post

The Virginia Senate Seat is a local election in which i decided to take a closer look at. The 2008 eletion will determine who will rep. the state in the US Senate. With John Warner not up for re-election due to retirement after 5 years, this will be a more open voting campaign. The candidates include former Govenors of VA Mark Warner(democrat) and Jim Gilmore (republican), and Bill Redpath (libertarian) and Glenda Gail Parker (green).

With looking at current results from recent polls conducted for the running of the candidates, the rade is definately "Democratic favored". With new stats, Warner leads with 57% and Gilmore 31% ,The poll was conducted with 625 registered voters. It had a margin of sampling error of plus or minus 4 percentage points.

Jim Gilmore campaigned for the Presidential nomination in 2007 until he became the frist hard core Republican to drop out. After leaving, he was nominated as the Repub. candidate for the VA Senate. As of today, he is the Chair man of the National Council on readiness and Preparedness which has to do with social security. Along with that he is the President of a non-profit homeland security institution. Gilmore also is largely involved with the National Rifle Association in which protects the second ammendment.

Mark Warner was exspected to go on with the 2008 Democratic nomination for president, yet he announced in 2006 that he would not run due to his family. Having been offered the potential of being the Democratic vice presidential pick, he turned it down considering he recieved a nomination for US senate in which he claims is the best of the best.Warner involved himself in public efforts related to health care, telecommunications, info technology, and education.Governor Warner believes we need to bring a transformative change to our national energy policy, that we need to work with our military leaders to develop a responsible plan, is committed to bringing leadership to the fight to fix our country’s health care system and wants to put America on the economic offensive.

Bill Redpath is the chairman of the United States Libertarian Party. On March 29, 2008, the Libertarian Party of Virginia state convention voted to nominate him as the party's official candidate. He follows the role of an average Libertarian, Freedom of trade, details on immigration, and laissez Faire markets.

Glenda Gail Parker calims we need high-speed Rail nationwide: reliable, clean, efficient, quiet, safe Rail service. She is a Businesswoman ,US Air Force Officer , Retired civilian executive budget analyst ,Mother of three grown children, grandmother of five.

CURRENT EVENT #3 blogg

The article that I read was about squirrels in Washington DC. As lame as the article title may be, and as boring and dumb squirrels are, some how this article grabbed my attention.
The reason that seeing squirrels in Washington DC is now such a big deal is because a little more then a century ago, there was not one squirrel to be found in the gardens or grassy parks of DC. Yet Eastern gray squirrels are native to our area, many of them have disappeared over the years due to hunting which wasn’t outlawed until 1906. Although after that law was issued, people in DC managed to stock the US capitol grounds, Lafayette Square, and the Mall with squirrels. With the squirrels being brought in by animal dealer Edward Schmid, the squirrels became a source of public entertainment and a simple pleasure.
The squirrels in Lafayette Square attracted many people to come and enjoy this unique animal. Special instruments such as squirrel houses were installed to keep the squirrels content in the square. Many worried about harsh winters to come in DC yet the US park police fed the animals as part of its duties. As the population in DC grew, people became more protective of the squirrels, saying cats were terrorizing squirrels, dogs were chasing squirrels, and once again the food supply caused public anxiety leading to the creation of a designated feeding ground.
Frederick Law Olmsted was the US capitols first landscape architect. He was one of the main guys who called for more squirrels in DC parks. He Quotes…"It is not the least of the charms of those grounds as they are to-day to see the familiar gray squirrels quietly feeding there, or bounding over lawns, or scampering up and through the trees." The piece goes on to say that "people passing through the Capitol grounds, whatever their hurry may be, . . . will stop for a moment and linger over the little gray figures, with all their associations of childhood in the woods."

Current event #2 blogg

On September 18, 2008 a United States Soldier’s were shot on their patrol base on the Southern side of Baghdad. That very same day of the two soldiers being shot, news was brought to the United States that seven Americans were killed due to a helicopter crash. The accident was not in result of attacks, yet causes that are still unknown. With all the totals in, eleven soldiers are said to have been killed since Sunday without any relation to enemies. Although the names of the helicopter victims were never released, Sgt. Darris J. Dawson (24) and Sgt. Wesley R. Durban (26) were identified as the shooting victims. The two men who were stationed 30 miles outside the capital, were said to be involved in a “non- violent shooting”, yet the military failed to name the other solider involved in this incident. Another United States solider is held in custody right now for the deaths, until further investigation has taken place. Yet many still don’t know if the event was deliberate or accidental, many fail to talk about the incident due to minor details. The CH-47 helicopter, which crashed west of Basara shortly after midnight, was part of a four-helicopter convoy flying from Kuiat to Balad. Being the deadliest helicopter accident since August 22nd of last year, many investigations are taking place due to the mystery of this plane wreck.

current event #1 blogg!

I just read on a Washingtonpost.com an article called "Where have all the protests Gone?" started off by talking about how the stock market has gone nuts, and the governemnt is treating wallstreet with random cures that is going to cost the United States nearly one trillion dollars, 4100 deaths have resulted in our 6 year war, and for the first time ever sex and race is coming into play in our presidential electoin. All these events this article talks about show that this time period that we are going through is a first for alot of things in our nations history. In fact with all these firsts, people today wonder, why is there no more protests anymore? With all these contreversys and such, why are their no more street protests or riots? So, in Washington Sq. Park the question was asked why the riots are not common anymore, and many responded in saying "My sense is that nobody feels they can make a difference in the same way that students did in 1968(a time during radical activism)," and also "Nobody has the motivation to follow through on such a storng opinion now-a-days". The main point the article really trys to get across is that college students and teens really dont get involved in issues that may effect them anymore. With studies shown, more kids prefer to get a good grade on a certain assignment and attend a nice school then show thier opinion on a current issue.

week two- election post

The most important issue to me in the 2008 election is definitely gas prices. I feel as if gas prices are a major reason why our economy is doing so horrible right now. This issue is trying to be solved by creating and encouraging many to drive hybrid cars and carpooling to work and such, yet this issue is a problem that really need to be solved. Obama has said "Gas prices are killing folks". He himself is a major supporter of ethanol and says that the country need to do more to increase the production of this chemical. Obama believes that we should be investing our money into new technologies so we can replace the common engine in cars today, he says repetitively that he thinks its time for us to move on because we want to get rid of fossil fuels. As quoted by Obama, ."When John F. Kennedy said we were going to the moon, the engineers and all those guys with the pocket protectors and the glasses at NASA, they all pulled out their slide rulers and said, 'How are we going to do that?’ “ Obama said. "They didn't know how it was going to get done. But once we set a clear goal and Americans buy into that goal, then nothing can stop us. The same is true on energy." Yet, if Obama was to vote for the CLEAN energy Act of 2007, by 2016 prices of gas would rise over $6 dollars per gallon.

Although Gas prices could be considered a local issue due to different prices at different gas stations, it is a major national issue. Due to the facts that a large number of factors such as world demand for oil and limited US refinery capacity to supply the gasoline, the war in Iraq has added a lot of conflict, and threats of to little supply, has threatened not only or states yet our Nation.

A local issue in this election is definately the issue of seat belts. As dumb as that may sound, I really believe that every state should have a law saying that a seat belt is neccessary. With the amount of car accident now-a-days with impacient drivers, i really think a seat belt could save someones life. With the click it or ticket law, alot of people follow, but i know that when i get in the car with my friends many dont follow it. Although i always preech to my friends about how important i feel it is to wear a seatbelt, some of them just dont care and i feel like thats not right and it needs to be more heavily enforced.

Due to McCains decision that he made today, i definately beleive he is being smarter in the topic of debates. He is postponning the debate on friday until the resolution of the Wallstreet financial mess, he even vowed to suspend his campaign to put his eye on findinga solution to this problem. I believe that this decision really shows the American people how dedicated McCain is toward his country, and that in his mind politics come second, while emergencys come first. Neither campaign has changed its tax or spending proposals even though the country suddenly faces the prospect of much higher deficits, an overhaul of key financial institutions and the essential nationalization of the country's largest insurance company. Whether they deal with it now or not, economists and analysts say, the next president may find it extremely difficult to keep all his promises because of the worsening fiscal environment. Although Neither Campagin has changes thier tax proposals re dealing with major issues dues to the countrys largest insurance co. overhauling, whether the two deal with the situation or not the next president definately is going to have trouble keeping thier promises because of the trouble that is going on.

Electronic media has a large part in this election. With many adds as seen on the TV come on, either talking smack about each party, or talking about the good of themselves, the media definately has a large part on this election. Considering many young voters only hear or see things about the nominees threw the computer or television, Obama and McCain are trying to get thier messages out in ways that young people will connect and come out and vote.

week one- election post

Well, for me, choosing a political party that i prefer, is very difficult. Many would guess that I am a Democrat, yet now-a-days i think I'm leaning toward the Republican Party. At the beginning of the Democratic convention, i was all for Obama. I thought he was an awesome family guy, related to majority of the US population, and best of all related to the young voters of today. Yet, after McCain's Republican convention, i realized he was more of the type of guy I wanted to win presidency. He, unlike Obama, has ALOT of experience, and is also a great family man who I think would steer our country in the right direction.

Obamas views-

Abortion: Obama favors an individuals right to make decisions about abortion.
Immigration: He supports immigration reform that includes a path to citizenshp rights for those who qualify. He also supports secure borders.
Taxes: With health care goals, Obama does report that some increase of revenue would be necessary, and plans to allow tax cuts for the wealthy to expire.
Iraq: Opposed Iraqi war and would seek to bring troops out of Iraq as soon as possible if elected. Energy: Raise fuel efficiency standards in cars, cap greenhouse gas emissions, and supports investment in renewable fuels.
Gay marraige: open to gay marriage

McCains views-

Abortion: Opposes abortion
Immigration: Wants a comprehensible immigration reform bill allowing illegal immigrants to earn legal status through guest worker program.
Taxes: Against tax cuts, wants to lower spending, and keep tax levels steady.
Iraq: Supporter of Iraqi war and a backer of the troop surge.
Energy: Wants to cap system for greenhouse gas.
Gay marraige: opposed to gay marraige
